Welcome

You have come to the right place if you are looking for experts to grow your biomass business. Since 1999 our team at Wild & Partner has been passionate about the benefits that the use of biomass can bring to our lives and to our planet. We are here to support your journey to become best in class in anything related to biomass and its applications.

It is our firm belief and awareness that biomass, as a result of photosynthesis, is by far the most efficient CO2 sink, superior to all other renewable technologies. We also believe that human-managed forests are far more efficient CO2 sinks than unmanaged ones, not to mention mitigating wildfire risk by a factor of 100.

Our Biocoal Journey

Discover the essence of our journey - a testament to innovation and excellence in the biogenic energy sector. Following Michael's groundbreaking work in introducing PKS (Palm Kernel Shells) as a potent energy source to Europe and Japan, our focus transcended conventional trading to elevate the value of biomasses.

While conventional methods like cleaning and drying fell short of the surging demand for biogenic coal substitutes, we envisioned a transformative solution. With pride, we pioneered an industrial system that converts biomass into charcoal-identical fuel within an astounding 30 minutes - a true marvel of our expertise. This system, now partnered with an Austrian-Swedish consortium, produces top-notch steam coal substitutes and even medical-grade biocarbon.

Our progress has propelled us to the forefront of the industry. Active involvement in sector-specific associations and the founding of the International Biomass Torrefaction and Carbonization Council have solidified our position and forged powerful alliances with leading technology providers.

Dedicated to empowering our projects, customers, and partners, we prioritize independence from supplier interests. Leveraging the freedom to choose the optimal technology for each application, we ensure unparalleled value creation and foster mutual success.

What is biocarbon?

Every living plant, whether tree or grass, is fundamentally composed of the elemental building blocks of C, H, and O. While minerals and trace elements play varying roles, carbon constitutes a remarkable 50 to 60% of the plant's dry matter. However, only a fraction, about 20%, is classified as fixed carbon, while the majority comprises volatile matter. When exposed to heat, these volatile components evaporate, leading to devolatilization. Depending on specific temperature and residence time, varying degrees of devolatilization are achieved. This thermal treatment is known as Biomass Carbonization, a controlled thermo-chemical process that breaks down plant biomass into a solid fraction with concentrated carbon and syn-gases composed of evaporated Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen.

The process occurs under carefully regulated heating conditions in the absence of oxygen, commonly referred to as carbonization, and can be further categorized as torrefaction, pyrolysis, or carbonization/charring based on the specific process parameters applied. Throughout Biomass Carbonization, the biomass material undergoes elevated temperatures, usually ranging between 300°C to 1000°C, resulting in the decomposition into two main products: solid biocarbon and syn-gas.

The biocarbon produced is a carbon-rich, porous material, with a high calorific value due to the concentrated plant carbon. Simultaneously, the syn-gas comprises hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and other gases, providing an excellent renewable fuel source.

The significance of Biomass Carbonization extends beyond fuel production. This process facilitates carbon sequestration by locking carbon dioxide within stable biochar, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and contributing to climate change mitigation. Moreover, biochar serves as a valuable soil amendment, enhancing soil fertility, water retention, and nutrient absorption. This, in turn, promotes agricultural productivity and sustainability. Embracing Biomass Carbonization offers a plethora of environmental and agricultural benefits, reinforcing our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.

Torrefaction

a process operating within the temperature range of 200 to 320°C, serves as a fundamental step in biomass treatment. Though seemingly simple, it intricately homogenizes the biomass, eliminating limiting elements for enhanced usability.

With typical carbon contents reaching up to 60%, the resulting biomass showcases net calorific values ranging from 20 to 23MJ/kg. This torrefied biomass proves to be a remarkable drop-in substitute for fossil steam coal.

The derived syngases from the biomass are efficiently utilized in the combustion process, providing the necessary heat for the torrefaction, including pre-drying of the biomass. A significant aspect of successful torrefaction lies in achieving energy autonomy, where all heat demands are met through the utilization of syngases.

In essence, torrefaction represents a crucial step in optimizing biomass for diverse applications, paving the way towards a sustainable and energy-efficient future.

Pyrolysis

whether slow (>>30min) or fast (<30min), operates within the temperature range of 300 to 700°C. The choice between slow and fast pyrolysis depends on factors such as particle size uniformity and precise process control. Slow pyrolysis is recommended for highly heterogeneous particles requiring meticulous management. In both processes, a solid product is obtained, boasting carbon contents of up to 75%.

These solid products serve as valuable fuel sources for power plants and find applications in the metallurgical industry.

Remarkably, the syngases derived from pyrolysis contain more energy than necessary for the process itself. Hence, it is imperative for a pyrolysis plant to explore efficient ways to harness and utilize these energy surpluses, optimizing the overall sustainability and efficiency of the process.

Embracing pyrolysis offers a promising avenue for sustainable energy production and resource management, contributing to a greener and more environmentally conscious future.

Carbonization

also known as charring, represents the highest temperature process in the range of 700-1000°C. This intense thermal treatment concentrates carbon in the solid products, achieving an impressive up to 95% carbon content. The process entails rapid "flash" heating at an astonishing rate of 1000°C per second, with a residence time of less than 30 minutes.

Given these rigorous conditions, the feedstock, much like in fast pyrolysis, requires meticulous preparation and sizing to ensure effective activation during carbonization.

The significance of carbonization lies in producing highly carbon-rich solid products, offering valuable applications in various industries, including metallurgy and as a potent fuel source for power generation.

Through cutting-edge carbonization technology and precise feedstock preparation, our carbonization process exemplifies efficiency, sustainability, and innovation, paving the way for a greener and resource-efficient future.
